What are Black Lights Used For?

I used to solely connect black lights with Halloween events, haunted homes, or the made-up TV murder scenes from Law & Order: SVU until I began working in the lighting profession. Now that I've had some exposure to lighting, I realize that black lights are much more than simply fun accessories. Continue reading to learn about more creative, useful, and innovative applications for these unique light bulbs!

Black lights are lamps that produce little visible light and long-wave ultraviolet radiation. They emit a deep blue hue and are available in fluorescent, mercury vapor, and LED forms. What are some of the purposes for black lights because they aren't utilized for illumination?

Black lights are often used in contemporary times to identify fake money and credit cards. It is incredibly difficult to forge paper currency since it has security measures like symbols and graphics that can only be seen under a black light. Anyone who deals with money may quickly and easily tell if a banknote is genuine or phony by putting a dark light on it!

If you've ever visited a theme park, a club, or any place where admittance by ticket is required, it's possible that you had your hand stamped with stealthy, black light triggered ink. When illuminated by a black light, these stamps flash brilliantly, making it easy for security personnel to see those who have not paid for admission. Important papers are also marked using this science for further verification.

Black lights are also utilized in the medical profession to diagnose disorders like vitiligo and psoriasis. Although vitiligo, which is the depigmentation of the skin, is evident to the naked eye without a black light, using one to confirm the condition's existence. Black lights' UV rays may be used to treat psoriasis, another inflammatory skin condition, since they encourage the body to naturally produce Vitamin D, which promotes the healing of psoriasis lesions. Jaundice in infants is also treated with ultraviolet treatment.

Black lights are often used by hotel or animal kennel staff to ensure that rooms and facilities have been properly cleaned. The bodily waste of humans and animals contains organisms that glow under black lights, so it can be easily discerned if areas need more cleaning attention. This same science is applied to crime scene investigations to identify blood or other fluids pertinent to an investigation.

As you can see, black lights are used for much more than just creating the perfect haunted house. The ultraviolet rays emitted by black lights are one of the most useful types of lights, and their use spans many industries.
