What are COB lights?

You might have encountered fittings that read COB lights when looking for new light fixtures. What distinguishes them from LED lights? Are they superior? Is it time to use them? Here's a simple explanation of what COB lights are before you start asking additional questions, which you will undoubtedly do. This will provide you a basic understanding of what a COB light is and how it differs from other lighting options.

What does COB mean?

Chip-On-Board is referred to as COB. This kind of LED packaging firmly assembles many LED chips into a single module by bonding them to a substrate, such as silicon carbide. Since they still employ LED chips, they are technically not all that different from the LED technology you are accustomed to. However, when a COB LED is turned on, you'll notice that it seems more like a light panel than a collection of separate chips. As a result, COB LED fittings may achieve exceptional brightness uniformity.

What are COB light strips?

COB strip lights are one of the common uses for COB LEDs. The chips are encased on a flexible board, just like in a standard LED strip light, however COB LEDs are used in place of the traditional LED chip. The chips' light undergoes both reflection and refraction. Through interaction, it enables the phosphor in the encapsulating gel to uniformly produce light in a range of hues and temperatures.

How are regular LED strips and COB LED strips different?

The uniformity of light output is the first thing you'll notice when comparing COB LED strips to conventional strip lights. Regular strip lights contain individual LED chips planted apart from one another, but COB LED strips feature a linear colloid light-emitting surface. As a result, COB LED strips produce a more consistent and linear light output than typical strip lights, which appear to have graininess.

What are the advantages of a COB LED strip?

Now that you have an idea of what COB LED strips are, it's time to weed out whether on not you should get them! The easiest way of doing that is by identifying the advantages of COB LED strip lights.

No hotspot

The hotspots located throughout the LED strip are frequently the source of the majority of complaints regarding the lights. What are they? More noticeable spots in the strip where the source of the illumination is easily seen are referred to as hotspots. It's an issue since your strip lights must flow and not appear to be a fill-in-the-blank question if you want them to look appealing!

From the beginning to the end, COB LED strip lights will provide a steady and even illumination. The light output looks neater and is free of dark patches and inconsistent brightness.

Brighter illumination

What more is possible than a single module with many LED chips if one LED chip can already generate so much brightness? Indeed, compared to a standard LED strip, COB LED strip lights are significantly brighter! Furthermore, compared to a typical light strip, COB LED strips offer a broader beam angle.

More flexible

COB LED strips are more flexible because it uses a smaller diode size and has an even weight distribution. The diodes are incredibly tiny and narrowly spaced that any part of the strip is a replica of the other. This uniformity makes it easy to apply the strips, even fitting into tight areas and around corners. Now, you don't need to cut every time you make a turn!

Less heat, more efficient

The effectiveness of a tiny unit may be questioned due to the large number of LEDs it contains. Nevertheless, compared to other LEDs, COB LEDs offer superior heat transmission and efficiency. Despite using only 14 watts per meter, they are capable of producing over 900 lumens! Furthermore, because the COB LEDs are affixed directly to the flexible PCB, COB strip lights offer superior heat distribution. As a result, the heat is dispersed across the PCB rather than remaining inside the light source itself.

Where do you usually see COB LED strip lights?

Like any other strip light, COB strip lights have endless possibilities for applications. You can use it anywhere but make sure if you're putting it in the bathroom, your strip should be IP65 rated and above. This versatile lighting solution can be used as home décor (edge trimming decoration, staircase lighting, etc.), building lighting, outer wall outline and backlighting for appliances and furniture.

Other than that, you can also use it to decorate your party venue, set the mood of your event or upgrade the visual appeal of a hotel lobby and KTV bars! As said before, anything is possible as long as you get rid of the box that's limiting your ideas! COB strip lights are not only suitable in your home because it's perfect even in commercial spaces.
