What is the difference between UV LED and normal LED?

LEDs have become a popular method of lighting due to their energy efficiency and long lifespan. They are used in a vast array of applications, from home lighting to industrial and commercial use. LED technology has advanced over the years, giving rise to different types of LEDs such as UV LEDs. So, what is the difference between UV LED and normal LED?


The main difference between UV LED and normal LED is the wavelength of their light output. Regular LEDs emit visible light, whereas UV LEDs emit ultraviolet light, which is invisible to the human eye. UV LED's wavelength typically ranges from 240nm to 400nm, while traditional LED light output ranges from 400nm to 700nm.


Another key point of difference between UV LED and normal LED is their applications. Normal LED applications are extensive, including lighting, screens, and displays, while UV LED applications are mostly limited to specific fields such as forensic analysis, medical sterilization, and counterfeit detection. Due to UV LED's ability to kill bacteria and viruses, they are increasingly being used for sterilizing instruments and surfaces in medical facilities.


The construction and design of UV LEDs are also different from traditional LEDs. UV LEDs are built from inorganic materials such as aluminum, gallium nitride, and indium, which have a higher bandgap. This allows UV LEDs to emit light in the ultraviolet spectrum. In contrast, regular LEDs are built using materials such as gallium arsenide or silicon that have a lower bandgap. The wiring and structure designs for UV LEDs are slightly different to enable them to emit UV light.


Both UV LED and normal LED have their benefits and limitations. Normal LED is great for general lighting and display applications, and its energy efficiency has made it a popular choice in the industry. In contrast, UV LED is perfect for applications that require sterilization, counterfeit detection, and forensic analysis. For example, in forensic analysis, UV LED light can be used to reveal fingerprints, body fluids, and other physical evidence that can be invisible to the naked eye.
