What Kind Of Plant Lights Are Needed For Growing Strawberries?

What kind of plant lights are needed for growing strawberries?

info-750-550

Strawberries, rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and a unique flavour, have become one of the fastest-growing fruits in global consumption. China, as the world's largest strawberry producer, had a cultivation area of 200,000 hectares in 2023, with an annual output exceeding 3 million tonnes, of which home gardening accounted for 15% annually. However, strawberry cultivation in home environments often faces light adversity: the average daily natural sunlight duration in urban high-rise buildings is less than 6 hours, resulting in insufficient light duration; the lack of key photosynthetic wavelengths such as red light (600-700 nm) and blue light (400-500 nm) leads to uneven light quality; indoor light intensity is only 10%-30% of outdoor light, causing light intensity decay, directly leading to problems such as excessive vegetative growth, delayed flower bud differentiation, and reduced fruit sugar content. Insufficient light in home strawberry cultivation can result in yield losses of 40%-60%, becoming a core bottleneck for its widespread adoption.

Light, as the energy source for plant photosynthesis, plays a crucial role in regulating the growth and development of strawberries through its quality, intensity, and photoperiod. Red light promotes stem elongation and carbohydrate synthesis by activating phytochrome A (PhyA), while blue light regulates stomatal conductance and chloroplast development through cryptochrome. The photosynthetic efficiency of strawberries under combined red and blue light is 20%–35% higher than under single light, and the vitamin C content of the fruit increases by 15%–25%. Therefore, when choosing plant lights, we need to select lights that combine red and blue light and, secondly, full-spectrum lights. If the area is small and requires low power, we can choose low-wattage 25–45 watt bulbs. If the area is large, we can choose high-wattage 100–250 watt panel-type plant lights. Simultaneously, lights with IP65-67 waterproof ratings and high lumen output should be selected. Choose 30-50W/㎡ for the seedling stage and 60-80W/㎡ for the fruiting stage. During the seedling stage, focus on blue light (450-480 nm) to promote root development and thicker leaves; from flowering to fruiting, focus on red light (660-670 nm) to increase flowering and fruit set rates and enhance fruit sweetness.
