Differences in actual effectiveness between CRI 80 vs 90 vs 95

CRI (Color Rendering Index) measures how accurately a light source renders colors compared to natural daylight, on a scale up to 100. Here's what the practical differences actually look like:

 

CRI 80 (typical range: 80-89)

Colors appear reasonably natural but noticeably less vibrant than daylight

Reds in particular look muted, dull, or slightly brownish - this is the weakest point of CRI 80 sources

Fine for general ambient lighting where color accuracy isn't critical

Common in: standard office lighting, warehouses, hallways, budget LED fixtures, outdoor area lighting

 

CRI 90 (typical range: 90-94)

Noticeable jump in color fidelity - most people can visually tell the difference from CRI 80, especially with skin tones and red/orange hues

Skin tones look healthier and more natural

Good enough for most retail, residential, and hospitality use

Common in: retail stores, restaurants, home lighting, art galleries (mid-tier), makeup mirrors

 

CRI 95+ (95-100)

Colors are nearly indistinguishable from how they'd appear under natural daylight

Critical for any application where exact color matching or perception matters

The difference between CRI 90 and 95 is more subtle than 80→90, but still meaningful in demanding applications

Common in: photography/videography studios, museums, art restoration, textile/print color matching, high-end retail (jewelry, cosmetics), medical examination lighting, high-end residential

A few practical notes:

The jump from 80→90 is far more visually obvious than 90→95 for most people in everyday settings. Diminishing returns kick in above 90 unless you have a specific professional need.

CRI only tells part of the story - it's an average across 8 (sometimes 15) reference colors, and can miss saturated reds specifically. If red rendering matters a lot (e.g., meat displays, skin tones), look at the R9 value too - a light can have high overall CRI but poor R9.
