How many light does classroom need ?

The number of lights a classroom needs depends on room size, fixture type/wattage, and required light levels, but here's how to work it out:

 

Recommended Light Levels

Educational standards typically recommend:

General classrooms: 300–500 lux (around 30–50 foot-candles)

Whiteboards/chalkboards: 500 lux (needs extra focused lighting)

Computer labs: 300–400 lux (to reduce screen glare)

Libraries/reading areas: 500 lux

 

How to Calculate Number of Fixtures

Step 1: Find room area
Length (m) × Width (m) = Area (m²)

Step 2: Use the lumen method formula

Number of fixtures = (Required Lux × Area) / (Lumens per fixture × Utilization Factor × Maintenance Factor)

Utilization Factor (UF): typically 0.6–0.7 for classrooms with light-colored walls/ceiling

Maintenance Factor (MF): typically 0.8 (accounts for dust, aging, dirt)

 

Example Calculation

For a classroom 8m × 6m = 48 m², targeting 400 lux, using LED panels rated at 4,000 lumens each:

Number of fixtures = (400 × 48) / (4,000 × 0.65 × 0.8) = 19,200 / 2,080 ≈ 9.2 → round up to 10 fixtures

 

Quick Rule of Thumb

If you don't want to calculate precisely:

1 LED panel (2ft×4ft, ~4,000–5,000 lumens) per 4–5 m² of classroom space is a common rough guideline for standard classrooms.

 

Practical Tips

Use even spacing in a grid pattern to avoid dark spots

Position fixtures so light falls evenly on desks and the whiteboard (boards often need supplemental lighting)

LED panels (2x2 ft or 2x4 ft) are the most common modern choice - efficient and long-lasting

Consider natural light from windows - you may need fewer fixtures near window walls, but should still design for cloudy days/evening use

Color temperature: 4000K–5000K (cool white/daylight) is generally recommended for classrooms - it supports alertness and concentration better than warm light

Anti Glare ( UGR<19) ,  use low glare LED Lamp is very import for students eyes , so you need to choose UGR<19 low glare LED Lamp 

RG0 low blue light is also another key factor for students eyes ,  High CRI 95-99 is also very good for students eyes .
