What is colour temperature? A look at 3000K, 4000K, and 6500K colour temperature charts! Two tips for choosing the right colour temperature to control the atmosphere of a space.

The primary function of lights is to illuminate a space, making it easier for the eyes to see. Besides this, they also have the function of adjusting the atmosphere! Imagine the completely different feelings you have when you're in a convenience store and a coffee shop, right? In addition to the different effects of the lighting fixtures, colour temperature also has a significant impact. But what exactly is colour temperature? This article will tell you how to identify and utilise colour temperature to create the perfect lighting atmosphere for your space!

What is colour temperature?

Color temperature is often mistakenly thought to be the temperature of light, but it actually indicates the color of light! Have you ever seen fire display different colors? This is because different temperatures produce different colors of light. As the temperature gradually increases, the color of the light also changes. For example, the temperature of a blue flame is higher than that of a red flame. Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K). The lower the color temperature value, the warmer and yellower the light appears to the naked eye. Conversely, the higher the color temperature value, the cooler and whiter the light appears. Therefore, color temperature can directly change the atmosphere of a space and is a very important aspect of lighting design!

3000K Color Temperature (Warm Yellow Light): Cozy and Relaxing. Warm yellow light has a color temperature of approximately 2700K to 3000K, similar to incandescent light. Warm light gives people a warm, comfortable, and tranquil feeling. Lower color temperatures help maintain the secretion of melatonin, which can soothe and relax emotions after a busy day, promoting a good night's sleep. Therefore, warm yellow light is frequently seen in places that promote relaxation and rest, such as parks, cafes, or bedrooms. Besides creating a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere, it can also create a romantic and warm ambiance!

4000K Color Temperature (Natural Light): Natural and Comfortable. Color temperatures are commonly indicated as 4000K to 5000K, falling between warm and white light. Also known as sunlight, natural light combines the advantages of both. At the same luminous flux, natural light feels brighter than warm light while being softer than white light, making it less likely to cause stimulating or drowsy feelings. Natural light is comfortable, suitable for reading and office work, and does not easily strain the eyes even after prolonged use. It also enhances the ambiance of a space and is commonly used in offices, hotels, and art galleries.

6500K (white light) color temperature: Bright and clear.

Also known as cool white or daylight, its color temperature is commonly between 5700K and 6500K. White light generally gives people a bright feeling and can help them concentrate and stay awake, making it suitable for classrooms, conference rooms, gyms, and other places requiring high concentration. However, using white light lighting before bedtime can affect the secretion of melatonin, potentially increasing difficulty falling asleep or causing insomnia. Therefore, it is recommended to place white light in a study room at home.

How to Choose the Right Color Temperature? Color Temperature Selection for Home and Office Spaces

Color temperature can bring different feelings to an environment. In interior lighting design, the appropriate color temperature is selected based on the different uses of the space. Choosing the right color temperature can enhance the space! Below are color temperature suggestions based on different spaces.

info-750-750

It is recommended to use a combination of natural light and warm light in home spaces. For example, bright and soft natural light is suitable for the living room because it is a space where people usually spend a lot of time, and they often use their eyes for long periods of time watching TV, using their phones, etc. For bedrooms, it is recommended to use warm light sources to create a warm and relaxing atmosphere, which can also stabilize our emotions and improve sleep quality.

Recommended Color Temperatures for Office Spaces: Natural Light, White Light

White light is commonly used in office areas. For offices, natural light is recommended to keep the space bright without being overly stimulating. Whether doing paperwork or using a computer for extended periods, natural light is more comfortable for the eyes. Compared to offices, meeting rooms are more suitable for white light. A moderate amount of blue light can help maintain alertness and improve concentration, indirectly increasing work and meeting efficiency.

Two Reference Directions for Color Temperature Configuration

The choice of lighting color in a space is largely subjective, as everyone has different preferences and ideas about the use and purpose of the space. Therefore, there is no standard answer to what color temperature to choose. We offer the following two directions for your reference when planning lighting and color temperature.

Choosing Color Temperature Based on Space Purpose

The appropriate color temperature can be planned based on the purpose of the space and the needs of the users. For example, if a child's room needs to function as both a study and a sleep room, and will be used for extended periods, a neutral natural light can be chosen for the main light, supplemented by a white desk lamp to enhance the area on the desk. A warm wall lamp or nightlight can be installed by the bedside to cultivate a sleep-inducing mood before sleep. If the budget allows, consider dimmable and color-adjustable ceiling lights or color-adjustable recessed lights, which can be adjusted according to the current usage scenario.

Choose the same color temperature for the same space

info-650-402

Try to choose the same color temperature or use similar color temperatures in the same space to make the overall visual effect more harmonious. For example, interior design often treats the living room and dining room as connected areas, so you can choose to use a combination of natural light and warm light, or use natural light as the main light source and warm light as an accent light source. Putting different color temperatures together will add visual noise and make the environment feel cluttered.
